CU Book Store / Computers / Software Licensing / Ordering
Before a discussion on software licensing, it is important clearly distinguish between “Full-Packaged Product” (FPP) or “shrink-wrap” software, and software licensing. The full-packaged product or shrink-wrap software is what you will find here at the Buffalo Chip Computer Store in the CU Book Store. Sometimes it is referred to as “Finished Goods”. Essentially, it is a box which usually contains the media for installing the software on to your computer and then sometimes, a brief manual or documentation set. Normally, this type of software is sold with the understanding (the end-user license or EULA) that it is to be installed on only one computer. There are a couple of exceptions where this is not true, such as in the case of Microsoft Office for Student and Teachers, where you can install on up to three computers. You also have the right to future upgrades when they are announced by the software manufacturer, BUT at a price for the upgrade that they determine in the future. This type of product continues to be sold in the CU Book Store but its price is considerably more expensive than if you purchased licensing (if licensing is made available from the manufacturer).
There are two paths to purchasing Software licensing depending on the dictates of the software publisher or manufacturer. In the case of Microsoft and pre-merger Macromedia products, it is obtained by purchasing directly through our on-line affiliate, e-Academy. For the Boulder campus, purchases are made through CU Connect. For the other CU campuses, customers use a specialized authentication capability established by the respective campus IT group with e-Academy in which to make their purchases. The second pathway as directed by Adobe is to purchase directly through the store. If the purchaser is a student, they must physically come in to the Buffalo Chip in the CU Book Store where they can purchase after proper identification, selected titles of the Adobe software licensing. CU faculty and staff are not permitted to purchase any Adobe-branded software licensing for their personal use. They can purchase pre-merger Macromedia Studio 8 licensing for their personal use, but they must do so through CU Connect as discussed above. All CU departments are able to purchase all titles of Adobe licensing, but these purchases should be directed to Cynthia Ocken via email at cynthia.ocken@colorado.edu . Telephone orders are never accepted. Again, if you need assistance, please contact us for assistance.
In regard to Microsoft software licensing, University departments should NOT be using this channel for buying Microsoft licensing for University-owned computers. The University has an existing contract with Software Spectrum for licensing and you can contact them for your departmental orders (800-862-8434, option 1). However, CU faculty, staff, and students CAN purchase licensing at extremely low prices, for their own personal use, by purchasing on-line through e-Academy. There are several Microsoft titles from which to choose. Pre-merger Macromedia also offers great software licensing through e-Academy. Just about all Macromedia software titles are covered for departmental licensing, whereas only Macromedia Studio 8 is available for personal use by faculty, staff and students as mentioned before. You should know that with Macromedia licensing, actual fulfillment is via an electronic download direct to the computer; media is NOT shipped as it is for Microsoft.
